to Sweet Maria’s. Since 1990, we have provided the area with
award winning cakes and cookies made the old fashion way, with
real butter and fresh cream.
Maria Bruscino Sanchez always loved to bake. Living with her
mother and grandmother, baking was always a part of her life.
Her extended family of aunts and great aunts were always eager
to share family recipes and cooking secrets. When Maria turned
16 she went to work in a neighborhood bakery. There she
learned some professional baking and cake decorating
techniques while attending high school and later college.
After receiving a Bachelors Degree in marketing and settling
in her hometown, she continued to bake cakes for family and
friends while working in an advertising agency. She baked and
decorated in her home, by night, and delivered cakes before
going to work for a growing number of corporate accounts.
Baking for friends and family turned into a thriving home
business.
Supported and encouraged by her family, and husband, Edgar,
she opened the shop of Sweet Maria’s in the same neighborhood
she grew up in. At the same time, Maria’s mother, Cori,
retired from her career as a bookkeeper and her father Carmen,
retired after being a barber for 50 years. Her parents as well
as several aunts, cousins and sister-in-laws have been a part
of the close- knit team of Sweet Maria’s since its’ beginning.
After nine years, the bakery moved to its’ current location,
occupying 4,000 square feet and employing 12 year round
employees and many more for seasonal staffing.
Maria is also the author of 4
cookbooks; Sweet Maria’s Italian Cookie Tray, a collection
of Italian-American recipes, Sweet Maria’s Cake Kitchen, a
collection of more-than-basic cakes and frostings, Sweet
Maria’s Italian Desserts, a collection of Italian specialties
and Sweet Maria’s Cookie Jar, a
comprehensive collection of the best cookie recipes.
She is also
a frequent contributor to Intermezzo magazine.
Meanwhile, Maria continues to enjoy life as a hands-on
business owner and part of her local community. She can
usually be found at the bakery, apron covered in chocolate,
digging into the daily orders, meeting with new brides about
their cakes, or signing a cookbook or two. She continues to be
inspired to create new tastes and designs. At Sweet Maria’s
our motto has always been “more than just another pretty
cake”. “It’s always important for it to taste as great as it
looks”.
